SCIENCE MUSEUM FIELD TRIP

Today I went on a 'school trip' to the science museum.

We had chosen our groups and thus let loose to explore and to get inspired. Me and my group explored a variety of exhibitions within the museum however we had quite a lot of fun in the materials section. It was a separated section on the 1st floor. It included multiple elements of interaction design: sound, movement - crank a handle = ping pong balls flying everywhere. We were all highly amused for a good 10 minutes. We all knew these elements needed to be included somehow. We just had not come up with our idea yet. After exploring the sheer depths of the museum we explored the exhibition: MATHMATICS : The Winton Gallery which we needed design for. As soon as I entered the exhibition the first thing I noticed was the big aeroplane on the ceiling with this magnificent purple ploom of colour and architecture . I new our design had to be as eye catching as this. However I found this was the only mentally stimulating element within this exhibition. There were interesting sections within the space for example I was interested in the Tote and how the machine would give live odds on race dogs. However this was in a clear display case

which you could only look at. This was the case with all the displays I found the space very sterile and kind of boring, which is sad because there were some really interesting exhibits within the space.

What caught my eye was the display of skulls at the entrance, explaining how sections of your skulls would be divided up mathematically, to reveal what kind of personality traits were associated to different cortex's of the skull. However after exploring and looking around the exhibit we regrouped and discussed what we found and out of the discussion we had 3 clear ideas that could be developed further. These three ideas were:

three initial concepts:

- The digital space: This idea was a combination of Alastairs and Elliotts ideas combined. The concept was building the room of the future with all the walls as screens. The idea included using augmented reality to place tech and create new tech in digital space. People could also look at what was going on in the exhibition by looking at the screens text would be on the ceiling, floor and walls.

- Scan your Skull: This was mine and Adilas' idea. We could scan your face and make a 3D model of it. Almost like an Xray. You could then tell your personalty traits from the dimensions of your face/ skull.

- Inaccurate measurements: This was my idea that I put forward. I really like a display that feature the mathematical measurements that would be used all round the world. In the past a pound would not weigh the same as it would in England as to America. To make the numerical value the same across the board as it were, a cabinet was constructed and included all the numerical weight values. I thought it could be fun to make the 'dodgy scales' You could weigh yourself and then see what you would weigh anywhere in the world. So you could weigh lighter in Australia and heavier in Russia. It was a simple idea yet clear and fun.

However, we all agreed on the 'SKULL SCANNER' concept.

We set about dividing the initial roles and tasks up in association to our strengths and what skills we wanted to develop further.
