This week saw us take part in a two day workshop with Susanna Garcia and Borja Alexandre. We spent the two days focusing on our filming technique and brainstorming how we wanted to structure our videos for our conference [Untitled] with 'Its Nice That'.
On Tuesday we learnt about what went into filming great interviews and what made them successful. We thought we may want to include some interviews from the day of the conference and before hand footage (maybe get in contact with the speakers to do interviews or projects with them?)
We experimented with a variety of different camera angles and techniques to create short clips to help us understand the techniques and how to put them into practise. This was invaluable information, as even though I knew my way around a camera from a photographic perspective, I have wanted to improve my filming technique as this was a key skill I needed to improve upon. It was interesting to hear them speak about two different points of narrative structures and art direction. We were shown a very famous photograph from the cover of national Geographic of a girl form Afghanistan captured by Steve Mccurry and a black and white artistic shot. This was an interesting point as I could understand that we needed to either have an in-depth narrative or simple and corporate. We felt as a group, we wanted to make the brand identity engaging for the target audience with a message that the audience could relate to.
Today we felt more engaged and productive. This was because on Tuesday, we were not as sure what art direction we wanted to take the film. This was also because we spent the day with the rest of our friendship group. Which turned out to be a bad idea as we were in a group of 7 and this was far too large to create a coherent video and strong art direction. We also felt that we needed to work in the group we were going to work with for the conference. Thus the decision to split on the following day. However, on the Wednesday in between the two sessions I had seen a video on Instagram by @so.daze the video was part of a campaign for @clubmed in the Dominican Republic. I really liked the colours and the whole summer vibe thats related to festival culture. This is a very popular style trend for the target audience. It was positive and creative. I thought this would be a great direction to take our concept for the conference. The style would be light hearted and fun. I put the idea to the rest of my group and they really liked it. I felt that we needed to have a clear direction, it seemed we were pretty lost before this.
With that in mind we started the day by filming new footage that would construct our new light hearted art direction.
I created a short stop motion clip of Toby making a variety of facial expressions that come to mind when you think of creativity. These were stitched together in Photoshop as a stop-frame narrative. The photos were then converted into a short film clip which I then looped four times to create a GIF (this was created in Adobe Premier, then exported in Adobe Aftereffects)
At this point I then created path illustrations. To add colour motion and character, to the already charismatic facial expressions. I think this was on of the strongest aspects of the video however, as other members of my group did not know how to do this technique, so I taught them how to. My favourite aspect of the short film was Adila on the Sofa. I thought this was really successful as the reasoning for it was: When we design we move around a room to change perspective etc.
