FMP - Initial Ideas and Brainstorming

February 13, 2019

My first thoughts on FMP were two completely different ideas. One was looking at creating paintings with brain waves. And figuring out a way to use the activity from you brain completing a puzzle or different tasks to illustrate the activity in a painting that is as unique as your finger print.

My other idea was to make something surrounding cleft lip and palate which is a very personal topic close to my heart, and after discussing with both Brian and Derek, it was decided to go down this route. At this moment in time I do not where it will take me but I am just going to enjoy the ride as I could see there was a journey ahead. I I don't really like talking about cleft lip and palate nor do I like drawing attention to it. It was something I was born with and just got on with. I was also inspired to do something with CLAPA as I was shocked to recently discover they have had their funding cut. So I thought how can I help raise awareness of this great charity with my design ability?

I set about brainstorming ideas, looking a problems and thinking of creative solutions:

I started to create a deck as I like to create these as almost a digital Sketch book, as it helps me log websites I find useful or images. It shows the process which I used to do in a sketch book but digitally.

I looked at illustrations, animations to gain inspiration, I also researched journals as I still had my dissertation head on, and it was interesting finding out how different cultures approach cleft lip and palate. To compare the western and eastern interpretations was interesting. In medieval Britain people believed those born with a cleft were touched by the devil and the derivative understanding of biblical interpretation of the 'original sin'. However, on the other hand the Incan and Mayans believed those born with a cleft were Gods and had great power within society. This I did not know before researching for this project. It was fascinating to compare these findings to a modern day senario.

It was also interesting reading the papers conclusion of the topic and how social media defines the norms:
